2002 NCCS Biennial Meeting, Tucson, AZ

"Cast a Future Shadow"

Faith M. Strickland

Religious Emblems Committee

1. Copies of the Pius XII scout and counselor's guides were available for Diocesan purchase. Purchase order forms can be obtained from Barb at National. Braille editions of AAD and the new Pius XII participants books are available on loan from Barb Nestle at National BSA. A refundable deposit is required for each book.

2. The Emblems Committee edited and updated the Light of Christ and Parvuli Dei books as well as the Emblems Resources book. The Light of Christ may appear as a bilingual (English and Spanish) book but the Parvuli Dei will be in English except for a bilingual Introduction and Instruction to Parents section at the beginning of the book. The next (working) meeting of the NCCS will be held in Nashville in 2003.

3. Outreach to Hispanics- I obtained a xerox copy of the bilingual edition (out of print) of the Parvuli Dei book and will make it available to the DCCS. I would also like to remind the DCCS Hispanic Committee that the Diocese of Galveston-Houston has permission from the Emblems Committee to prepare and test a "Supplement" to the Ad Altari Dei handbook for use by parents. This Supplement should be in both English and Spanish. If the supplement is found useful, National will entertain a request for national distribution.

4. I was a co-presenter of "Tigers & Wolves & Bears, Oh My!" and "You Did What, Where, When?" workshops at the Tucson 2002 NCCS Biennial meeting.

5. I have brought back a CD containing the new Scouter Development training and participants manual Powerpoint presentations for use by our DCCS.

General News

1. The big emphasis at the meeting was the development of youth - youth-run retreats and how to get there from adult-run retreats. The diocese of Trenton, NJ is leading the way in youth-planned and youth-run retreats. Email addresses and handouts are provided.

2. Philmont training (Scouting in the Catholic Church) is actively seeking attendees. Jerry Scanlan is this year's course director and will assist in coordinating ground transportation from the airports to Philmont.

3. The NCCS is mounting a major membership initiative (see handout) to begin January, 2003. The initiative is aimed at recruiting youth and Catholic Churches to increase Cub scout and Venture level participation. The overall goal is a 10% total increase in the number of youth currently participating. The initiative includes both increasing the number of members in catholic chartered units and increasing the number of units chartered to catholic institutions, including Knights of Columbus. In the West, 21% of catholic units are chartered to K. of C. compared to 12% nationwide.

4. The St. George Trek currently has 49 participants. They are hoping for 62. NCCS requested promotion of the Trek in each Diocese.

News from National BSA

General:

BSA Marketing and Development has produced a study of 100 BSA camps which contains lots of statistics that can be used by Councils and in recruitment. For example, 80% of the youth responding to questionnaires said that they tried something new at camp. These camps helped develop leadership skills in the youth and are a key resource in youth character development.

Cub Scouting

1. There is a new Cub Scout/Pack organization kit which contains a new section on Cub scout character development.

2. National has produced a 'Cub Scout Highlights' folder for distribution to scout councils (see handout).

2. A manual with video tape called "Cub Scout Fun" has been produced by BSA Relationships. This package includes a large Ring-binder manual, a video tape, and other materials for use in starting Cub scout packs. I have requested a copy be sent from National BSA.

Boy Scouting

1. A record number of boys were awarded their Eagle rank in 2000-2001. There is a total of 1.5 million Eagles to date.

2. There is a new Fall Scouter Recruitment patch.

3. A New Leader Fast Start Guide will be available shortly.

Venturing

1. There will be available shortly a new Venturing packet to use when approaching religious organizations to set up new units. This packet is specifically tailored to the type of organization you will be a approaching to best address their needs.

2. May '02 will see a launch of a bilingual tape "Venturing Out - Keys to Safe Driving" CD for youth. This is a 20 minute Powerpoint presentation with access to internet sites and internet video and interactive sites.
